Dental fillings to repair minor cavities or lesions on the surfaces of teeth, though typically extremely common and straightforward, are among the most important procedures in dentistry.

This, first and foremost, is because fillings restore a tooth’s strength and shape and protect against further damage. Another important consideration, however, is their aesthetic impact. This is where tooth-colored fillings come in!

What Are Dental Fillings Comprised Of?

Dental fillings can be made from a variety of materials, with the material used depending on the extent of the damage to the tooth and the tooth’s location in the mouth.

For teeth that are less visible, durable, and inexpensive, amalgam fillings, consisting of a combination of metals, including silver, tin, copper, and mercury, are typically used. However, for teeth that are more prominently visible, tooth-colored fillings are, literally, a more attractive option, as they not only restore form and function but also a natural look to a patient’s smile.

What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings Comprised Of?

Tooth-colored fillings typically consist of a mixture of glass or quartz and a composite resin material, though porcelain is also an option.

Composite resin, though less durable than amalgam, offers the benefit of easy shading to the color of surrounding teeth. Porcelain, meanwhile, offers the dual advantages of durability and a similar easy shading, though it’s worth noting that these fillings tend to be pricier than the alternatives.

How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?

Typically, a dental filling can be expected to last for between seven and fifteen years. This is admittedly something of a wide range, as each individual case depends on a number of factors, including:

  • Materials used in the composition of the filling
  • The patient’s eating and dental hygiene habits
  • The pre-filling level of damage to the tooth
  • Whether the patient grinds their teeth while sleeping

As a result, it’s important to consult with a dentist to ensure that you get dental fillings that are best suited to your needs.
