Professional Cleanings at Train Station Dental

Why Are Professional Cleanings So Important?

The top two reasons adults lose teeth are cavities and gum disease, which is why, on top of a good dental hygiene routine, regular professional cleaning appointments are so crucial. Even the best daily brushing and flossing won’t get every bit of plaque between teeth and along the gumlines, and that plaque eventually hardens into calculus. Dental calculus, once formed, is impossible to remove with regular brushing and flossing and requires a professional cleaning by one of our amazing hygienists. Dental calculus is porous and encourages more calculus and stain to form on the existing calculus. Dental calculus causes bad breath, inflamed gums, and bone loss, which eventually leads to tooth loss. The bacteria that create calculus can also travel into our bloodstream and cause cardiac disease, pulmonary issues, and other systemic diseases. Only a professional cleaning gets rid of all that dental calculus and staining which, in turn, not only results in healthy teeth and gums, but also a healthy body as well.

How Often Should I Come in for Cleanings?

In general, patients should schedule basic cleaning appointments twice a year, but it’s important to talk to Drs. John Savon and Sara Engleman about their individual dental health needs. Patients with risk factors for developing gum disease may need more frequent cleanings, and diabetic patients often require as many as four cleanings per year to fight back against the attendant oral health difficulties.
